Since November 2023, the Multicultural South Australia Ambassador Program has been helping South Australian organisations to place cultural diversity at the heart of their workplace.
The program was developed by the South Australian Government to activate the South Australian Multicultural Charter - the document that promotes a unified, harmonious, and inclusive South Australian community that values, respects and supports diversity.
During the six-month program, organisations get access to individual and group training, and support to assess their current level of diversity and cultural awareness and take practical steps for more culturally responsive and inclusive workplaces.
By the end of the program, participating organisations identify a set of targeted, realistic and achievable actions to implement the South Australian Multicultural Charter in their workplaces.
So far, 15 South Australian businesses, not-for-profits and local councils have joined the program.
These organisations have implemented actions such as dedicated culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) employment pathways, cultural competence training, internal diversity surveys, buddy programs, use of technology to deliver services in additional languages, increased workplace flexibility for CALD staff, expansion of employment pathway programs to international students, among many other great initiatives.
Registrations of interest are currently open for organisations to participate in the next rounds of the program, in June 2025 and January 2026. There is no cost to participate but places are limited.
One of the organisations that has recently completed the Ambassador Program is Torrens Transit, which is responsible for delivering bus services across Adelaide’s East West, North South, Outer North and Outer North East.
"The program has helped Torrens Transit develop a comprehensive action plan for promoting and supporting cultural diversity and inclusion," said Phil Gilbert, Torrens Transit’s People and Culture Manager.
"We are committed to continuing our efforts to create a more inclusive workplace and are looking forward to seeing the positive short and long-term impact of the program on our employees and customers."
Expressions of interest for the June 2025 round close on 16 May 2025. For more information, click here.
