New Adelaide Aquatic Centre hits major milestone

Detailed artist's impressions of how the new $135 million Adelaide Aquatic Centre will look when completed have been revealed.

The images form part of the State Government's application to the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) for formal planning consent to build the new aquatic centre in Adelaide's northern parklands.

Set to be powered using 100 per cent renewable energy, the building will be constructed in Pardipardinyilla/Denise Norton Park using a selection of locally sourced, low carbon emission materials.

It will feature indoor and outdoor pool areas, water slides, splash zones and lawned spaces. Other features include a gym, spa/sauna/steam room and community change rooms. In addition, 1000sq m of land will be returned to the parklands.

The latest artist's impressions are updates of the initial concept designs unveiled by the State Government in June, that were developed following extensive consultation with more than 1200 users, sporting groups and residents.

According to the planning report lodged with the SCAP, the building's design and positioning have been carefully considered to respect National Heritage values and integrate into the parklands setting.

While the overall footprint of the complex  will be smaller than the existing aquatic centre, the number of car parks will increase from 266 to approximately 375.  It will also have electric vehicle charging stations and about 55 bicycle spaces.

The existing aquatic centre will close in August 2024, with the new complex planned to open in the summer of 2025/26

An Expression of Interest is currently underway for potential builders to construct the facility.
