Tap and pay to be rolled out across SA's train network

Tap and Pay will be available on all Adelaide Metro trains, buses and trams by mid-2025.

Commuters will be able to enjoy tap and go convenience across Adelaide's entire public transport network by mid-2025.

The State Government will spend $7 million over the next three years to finish the final Tap and Pay rollout, on all Adelaide Metro trains.

By mid-2025, commuters will be able to use their Visa or Mastercard – including on their smartphone or other device – as well as their metroCARD to pay for fares on all Adelaide Metro buses, trains and trams.

Smart validators are already available on trams and are in the process of being installed to all buses across the network.

Part of the funding will also be used to replace barrier gates at Adelaide Railway Station.

New electric trains on the Gawler Line have already been fitted with smart validators. These validators currently accept only metroCARDs, but will start accepting credit cards when the broader Tap and Pay rollout is completed.

Tap and Pay fares are charged as a regular metroCARD fare (peak or off-peak) and valid for two hours.

Paper tickets are slowly being phased out, as the smart validators are installed.
